A Jazz Joke

Forums

Riding back a late night on an MTA bus, I spotted a man rolling around an upright bass. I started up a conversation with him about how he was a jazz musician for various bands and playing different clubs every night. I mentioned how i'm always much more impressed by the backing band than the "star" of the show each time I see a jazz show. This prompted him to tell me this joke:

Whats the difference between a bull and a band?

On a bull, the horns are in the front and the ass is in the back.

Hits and Misses

I'm a total Neil Gaiman fanboy, so I'm giddy with anticipation of the theatrical release of Stardust tomorrow. I just re-read the book and was delighted to find it as charming as when I first devoured it in 1999.

Which receiver ?

I just bought Paradigm 90P`s and also bought Energy Audyssey A5+2`s. Dont know which I will use yet for my fronts. Have a Bic Venturi 15" sub and (at present ) have Bic Venturi Cinema rears and now am ready to buy a receiver. I am leaning towards the Onkyo 805 because of it`s price (900.00 ish) and because it has 130 watts per channel , true HD, 1.3 HDMI , Audessey speaker set-up , and almost all of the regular receiver options . I havent heard about any problems with them yet .Is this a good choice ?

My current system consists of the following: Creek cd53 SE cd player, NAD silverline s100 pre, NAD Silverline s200 Power amp, KEF Reference 104/2 speakers. Cabling is Nordost red dawn throughout.

My listening room is 6.5m long x 4.5m wide with speakers firing from the narrow wall (about 50cm from back & side walls in free space)

"Man!"

"Man!"

It was no surprise that Charlie Haden and Kenny Barron struck such rich chords Tuesday night at the Blue Note, the first in a series of duet concerts that Haden, one of the great bass players in jazz, is headlining—six nights, four different pianists—at the club in Greenwich Village. Haden is best known as the bassist in Ornette Coleman’s original quartet, but it’s a mistake to tag him as a “free jazz” musician, in the usual sense. Above all, Haden is a romantic—he loves ballads and waltzes, he plucks a thick, juicy tone—and Barron is a lush balladeer. A few moments in the opening set didn’t quite click (maybe because Haden, now 70 but still youthful, recently had a hernia operation), but most of it did, Barron cruising triplets on the keyboard, Haden responding with undisguised but tightly harnessed emotion. The duet recording he and Barron made several years ago, Night and the City, seems a simple pleasantry if you play it in the background, but listen closely, there’s so much intricacy between the two—and yet, at every level, the music above all delights and charms.

Budget DAC's

I've got this new set of Beyerdynamic 880's and I'm playing lossless files out of my computer. I'm looking for some info about options for D/A conversion. At the moment I'm going optical digital from PC to Yamaha HTR5140 receiver but I bet I can do a lot better D/A conversion than that receiver. I've read the raves about the Musical Fidelity X-DAC which I guess I can pick up for $600 or so. I'm wondering if there are cheaper options. The front of the Stererphile website has a leading photo of these Entech DAC's... the article is from 1998??
