Thoughts?

I have dCs Elgar Plus, Purcell and Verdi going into McIntosh MC501 which go to JMLab Utopia Nova. It presently sounds a bit analytical and dry though extremely accurate. I also have a Levinson 26S pre-amp but my dCs does not sound as good through this. In NYC Lyric, Sound by Singer and Stereo Exchange all suggest that I will get more bloom through a pre-amp. Two questions:

1) Is it true that I will get more bloom through the right pre-amp?

Stereophile reviewed the VTL 6.5 in the July issue. Yet, it's not listed in the 2007 Recommended Components. Does that mean that the 6.5 is not recommended or was just an oversight?

In his review of the Oppo 970HD universal player Wes Phillips decoded the Oppo's coax TOSLINK signal with a Slim Devices Transporter when he was playing SACDs, claiming the audio was on par with his Ayre transport. What's up with that? I thought SACD players don't output digital signals.

I just purchased a new Pioneer Elite PD D6-J, anyone heard of it? Well, I bought it to update my PD-65 and also have SACD capabilities. What I didn't notice or bother to check out in the store was the amount of mechanical noise coming from the player. I guess I've been spoiled for 17 years with the DEAD SILENT play of the PD-65. How can you have 17 years of development and advances and come out with a player that makes so much noise? Can't you incorporate techniques learned almost 20 years ago to make a better product?
