There hasn't been much talk about this. T Bone Burnett produced John Mellencamp's new album. It is worth checking out because of a high definition recording process Burnett calls "Code" which is on the included DVD. This is the first release using what looks like a real improvement and the antithesis of overly compressed CD, MP-3 etc. etc. No one seems to be excited about this, but the DVD sounded damn' good on the home theater. Listen first, even if you don't like Mellencamp (I am usually lukewarm) and then let's discuss.

I cant find any of the Thorens version on E-pray

I have cleaned up my circa 1978 Planar 2, cleaned the stylus, and it still sounds pretty good after all these years. But there are two problems:

Oil, or something, seems to be leaking from the base of the tonearm. I tightened the nut that holds the tonearm in place (which was loose), but I'm not sure what exactly is leaking, or how to fix it. Maybe it's the lifter?

I was reading about the physics of LP playback today, and ran into to some old stuff that gave me new questions.

According to some sources, a stylus tracking an LP at 2 grams can generate the equivalent of "12-14 tons of pressure" on the groove at the microscopic level.

I also read claims that the temperature of the groove/stylus nexus reaches 315 degrees F, temporarily liquefying the vinyl as the stylus tracks it.

I keep looking at that NextTag ad here for the NHT XD's and I'm drooling, but can't figure out a couple things...

The things come with 4 channels of amplification, with two woofer cones and two satellites. I re-read Kal's review, and he listed an amplifier in his associated equipment and also mentioned ease of matching them to an amp, leaving me unable to figure out what the four channels of amplification are for with the XD's.

I figure two for the woofers, but then what?
