Is it worth it?

So I have always enjoyed my music and have been inspired by my father and roommate to invest in my own hi-fi system. Now that I have some money saved up I am ready to do so but I have one major hurdle: all my music is in mp3 form and I dont have the original CDs to rip them losslessly from

So is it worth it to invest upto

The Best Album from The Bad Plus

The Best Album from The Bad Plus

I’ve sometimes wondered how long The Bad Plus can keep up their high-concept mix of pop and punk covers, avant-classical harmonies, jazz cadences, kick-ass polyrhythms, and sly but un-ironic wit. Don’t get me wrong: I like their music a lot; each of the players (Ethan Iverson, piano; Reid Anderson, bass; David King, drums) crackles with brio and virtuosity; their interplay is a delight. Still, in the six years since they improbably crashed onto the scene, there have been times when their conceit has seemed to reach its limit.

New Springsteen disc. Any info on how compressed?

Got the new Springsteen disc, and the music is OK, but it is quite fatiguing sonically.

How do you guys find the compression info you talk about?

This one doesn't seem to have alot in the dynamic range category, but it may be something else.

Music-wise, you can pick up various influences. The first cut could be a Dylan song!

Etta Gonna Kick Yo Ass

Etta Gonna Kick Yo Ass

The mini–dustup over Etta James saying she “can’t stand” Beyonce and was gonna “whip” or “whoop” her ass is a hoot. First of all, Etta’s legacy is in no danger. No one will ever top her rendition of “At Last.” That performance, her greatest single track, is in no danger of being superseded.

Robert Deutsch's article "Are You a Sharpener or a Leveler".

I have just received my copy of the February 2009 issue of Stereophile and read Robert Deutsch's As We See It "Are You a Sharpener or a Leveler" article ! - which has been generating quite a lively discussion (as Robert points out) :-
>>> "There are some nuances and complexities that I was not able to cover in a 500-word article, but I'm satisfied that the basics are there to stimulate discussion--which at least the article appears to have done." <<<

Parasound Halo P7

Having read Kal's review of the Parasound Halo P7, I'm wondering if my interpretation is correct:

Essentially the P7 is a really good $2K preamp with the added benefit of 7 channel inputs... rather than being just a very specialized product (with limited market appeal)...

(the other option that I assumed when I initially heard about the P7 was that it would just be a P3 with multi-channel inputs)

So in case all that was not clear:

If I was in the market for a $2K preamp (but didn't need multi-channel inputs) should I seriously consider the Parasound?
