Does your current receiver actually have a phono pre amp built in? What does the Yamaha owner's manual say about connecting a turntable?
receiver has no pre-amp & yamaha web site does say one is req. I was not aware of the pre-amp issue. It has been probably 20 yrs. since last used TT. If i have to make big investment in pre-amp,a new TT might make more sense or forget the old records altogether. have any ideas on a decent pre-amp that would allow to listen to an old record now & then? Thanks for the help.
Whether or not you upgrade the TT you will need a phono preamp. Thus, I would start here.
A 20 year old TT is probably just fine (although if belt-driven the belt may be tired). There may be (probably) is an issue with the cartridge however. Unfortunately, there are components in the cartridge that get tired with time. But, of course, try everything out and see.
I'm not up on good affordable preamps so I leave this to others.
You probably will really enjoy visiting your old LP friends - and they probably sound great - so don't give up on them.
