Keep on with Ortofon 2m Red or get new Music Hall Magic?

I am planning to pick up a new (demo model actually) Music Hall MMF 2.2 this weekend. It is from a friend who's family owns a hifi shop and he is giving me the option to get it w/out a cartridge or for $35 more, include a Music Hall Magic cart.

I have a 2M Red w a couple hundred hours on it and was thinking of just using this but, for $35, I am thinking the Magic would be worth a try but if it is not at least equivalent then I wont bother and instead spend that money on interconnects that are that much better.

Thoughts? I am not finding much on the Magic. I beleive it is not the II or III.

I would consider the Ortophon Red a much better cartridge. I would give it a try. The Turntable (which I used to have), is good enough to justify an even more expensive cartridge if you get the point where you want to upgrade.

I went to the Clearaudio Concept V2 on mine, and that was very nice. It runs $250 from Needle Doctor.

Red it is!

Thanks for the input. I will keep that recommendation in mind bc I am already thinking along those lines :).

I just realized that this table does not have replaceable interconnects so I guess I can cross that off my list to buy. I plan on stopping by the Needle Doctor next week (I am lucky to live nearby) and will probably pick up the Q Up thingy. Any other recommendations on accessories like a new mat or one of those weights that sits on the middle of the platter?

I have a spin cleaner and carbon brush but also wondering if I need a good stylus cleaner?

Went with the MMF 2.2 + the Magic 2 Cart

I ended up getting the tt with the Music Hall Magic 2 and am happy all around. My friend had it as an open box and the price was right!

After a couple days of listening I sprung for the Acryl It platter too because I was sick of the felt pad sticking to my records. I didnt expect much of a difference in sound but I am amazed that the platter switch made such a significant difference. There is more impact in percussive sounds and I swear that the clicks and pops are more subdued.

The only issue I have now is the VTA is adjusted up all the way and the cartridge is still bottoming out on all but perfectly flat records. I am using a weight but it doesnt flatten them enough to avoid this. I emailed Music Hall and will see what they say.
