Another possibility I suppose is going with a set of 2-way floorstanding speakers--so long as the drivers are at an adequate height.  Would there be any detriments to doing that?  Even if the port is below the desk, it really shouldnt matter, as most port response should be below the 100hz mark anyway (omnidirectionality correct?).  Do floorstanders at this pricepoint offer more bang for buck than similarly priced booksheves?  It should be noted that I'm not overy concerned about heavy LF response; I'm in an apartment.  That's primarly why my arrangment is set up the way it is, the speakers being on stands, and away from any walls really reduced resonance with the walls and floor.
