the flush/itch is normal/common as Niacin faciliates capillary dilation, improving circulation. Can be annoying, even frightening though.
Each night the symptoms get less severe for a lack of a better word. But, yeah, it was a little frightening the first night. Like the time I ate the brown acid... Last night it was only my legs heating up. BTW, I'm 20 pounds overweight. I need to watch what I eat and kick up my exercise routine a notch.
Pardon me if this is a silly question, but why not take it in the morning? Of is it a twice a day kind of thing?
Take in the morning and you'll have hot flashes during the day. Anyway, last night the side effect was about all gone.
I had a colleague that took niacin during the day - he would periodically look like a four-limbed lobster.
I guess you is dunned cured, then.
Lamont, cant do anything about your preference for men, though. No cure for that. Just give in to love.
BTW- and POSITIVE side-effects you have observed? If it eats up all that cholesterol will you have all this extra energy now? Lose weight? Or is it just enough that you might have more freely flowing arteries?
From what I've been told it raises good cholesterol that in turn lowers bad cholesterol. My overall cholesterol was 215, which is borderline high. The bad cholesterol was 163. Anything >160 is high. My good cholesterol was 42, which is borderline low. I need to get the good cholesterol up and lower the bad cholesterol before I get my ass in a sling.
I have noticed an increase in felt energy when I'm exercising but my appetite is up, which I need to watch. Niacin is just one thing to do when lowering cholesterol. I still have to watch what I eat, how much I eat, and exercise more. I've become a borderline sloth.
LOL. Exactly. That is why I went to the health food place. The high dollar Niacin is nonflushing (red faced). But from what I've heard you can take an aspirin with any Niacin to avoid flushing.
Interesting niacin trivia: sometimes the slow release that prevents flushing also doesn't allow the niacin level to get high enough to be effective.
In a way, the flush is a good sign regarding enough niacin getting into circulation.
Right you are about the aspirin trick, usually one or two hours beforehand to give it adequate time to get in place.
Over time, you build up resistance to the flush, like getting used to spicy food.
Niacin can raise blood sugar, so watching the carbs is important.
Best wishes, Lamont!
I've been taking 2000mg of Niaspan (a prescription version) since 2001. I like the warm feeling as I go to sleep. Only once or twice have I woken up looking like I laid in the sun all night. I figure out what triggers the severe flushing.
That still hasn't been enough to get my HDL up over 40. My total is under 110, but they want the HDL enough. In fact, I just started on 3000mg of fatty acids from fish oil. I'm noticing no dire effects from that, other than it's so much oil that it does lube up the ole digestive track.
Hang in there. You'll get used to the Niacin.
Dave
I have an Irish friend who used to look like that at times.
Red as a lobster and out cold.
Sounds like Mrs. Sanford. Damn Irish!
My doctor recommended Niaspan and warned me about possible hot flashes. My coworkers wanted to call 911 for me when they saw my red face. Instead I read "The Cholestrol Myths".
