He kept the Kimber cables in his system because they SOUNDED better. What part of that did you miss?
He questions his hearing anything better, read it again, he questions the fact that he knew he changed teh wires, maybe that changed his thinking. And it was the only one that responed, so why not keep some free stuff. But if he was also going from 18ga to say a 12 guage, any changes he might have heard is more a change due to a physicla thing called wire size. The fact that he questioned himself, di dhe really hear anything? Also mentions none of this dramatic over teh top improvements liek magic wire companies lead you to beleive in their nonsense ads.
Even you don't believe that he was using 18 Gauge wire. Stop making excuses for what you don't understand and can't hear!
He kept them in his system!!!!! What part of that did you not understand? If your "amplifier "God" thinks he hears a difference why can't us mere mortals. The question really should be why can't you hear what Frank Van Alstine hears. I think you complain about wires because you really have nothing to say! Or is it that because you hard wire and solder all of your connections you are too lazy to experiment? You can't admit there could be differences because that would mean your system is not "perfect". Could your continual quest for more wattage be because your system really doesn't sound all that good. Many times listeners resort to higher playback volumes because they are missing something in the sound. Could your insistence on multi kilowatts of power be because your system simply doesn't sound that good?
More power is no compensation for inadequate sound!!!!
Joe,have you ever tried evaluating cables at 125 db ?
Like fine Porsches, WATTS from AVA there is no substitute!!! Around 4800 is about all i need for now. It does make it better. Bass is clearly defined, highs and mids are super clear and ALIVE. A few hundred won't do it. I heard these same speakers with a mere 250 or so pc, it DISTORTED!!! I heard it, my ears do work, they hear things that matter, not delusions of fuses and magic twists. Bass is always more defined when using more watts to control the drivers, do your own test use a single amp, then Bi amp easily heard improvement. then double that and it's again dramatic improvemtn. Eash amp does less, sounds better. Not 125dB, that would be absurd....around 106 or so when really crankin'...it's ALIVE. Take a good SPL meter to a LIVE event, you'll be surprised just how loud a really good live event is. AND if it's done right, it's not shrill, boomy or painful. There is a difference, in live setups like at home setups. I've heard many bad live events, and some incredible ones that was loud and pristine. you may have been to to many BAD events where you think LOUD is bad, it's not teh volume, it's the DISTORTION!!!!
"Bass is always more defined when using more watts to control the drivers"
Actually the the lower the output Z of the amplifier the more control the amplifier has on the speaker, for a given Z. This covers the entire frequency range of the speaker. However, bass is what most are concerned with.
Most look at the term "damping factor"; speaker Z divided by output Z of the amplifier.
Using the SAME amps, just more of em, bass got better and better, and the highs and mids got better and better, defined crystal clear Watts, it does matter. don't care how efficient the speakers are, more watts, just controls it all better. Like a car with much more HP than you really use for normal cruising, when you need the HP and torque, it's there to be used. Can't make chicken soup out of chicken shit, without watts it's all chicken shit.
Around 4800 is about all i need for now. Are you saying there is a chance you'll be needing more ?!?!?!?!?
I have not. I want to be able to do it more than once!
I have been on stage making that loud music. I didn't like having my ears ring the next day back then and I like it even less now. Yeah, I know I could use some ear protection but that's just treating the symptom not the disease.
"Using the SAME amps, just more of em, bass got better and better, and the highs and mids got better and better, defined crystal clear Watts, it does matter."
>>And how did you connect more amplifiers? If parallel then you increased the damping factor by decreasing the output Z.
Yiangos-
As DUP loses more and more of his hearing he'll need more and more power to compensate.
2 VanAlstine Ultra phase inverters driving 4 amps, each amp running in mono from the AVA phse inverters. Each speaker gets Bi-amped.
Ear plugs whenever i go to a live event...Kenny Wayne Shepperd was EXTREEMLY loud, at teh pain level, that was retarded!! But he can sure play. There is LOUd and thne there is ABSURD....106db at home is loud, not absurd, Kenny Wayne had to be up at 120 or so, i alwyas now carry ear plugs, always use proectection. Ringing ears teh next day ain't what I'm after. Read all about the dude from The Who, he is now an advocate of hearing proectection. The ear plugs allow you to actually hear everything better, cus it takes teh bite out of the excess lod. sometimes it's not that loud, sometimes stuff is way out of whack. 32,000 W at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville. I think i have more watts p/sq feet than them....you can't more air without WATTS and drivers to do it. No magic wires or wall outlets change physcis.
Legacy Helix need 3 amps per side, on top of teh one built in for the sub 750 on each speaker. So it would need 6 amps per system!! Cool...too bad Helix from Legacy is out of my world.....not enough hours in the day to work to pay for them. They are slick, seen them at the open house years ago. Like a Audi RS4 with 420HP, you don't need it all the time, but when ya do, it's nice to have it. Watts, it does good.
Big difference between biamping and 'more watts the tighter the bass'.
