Then there are the areas of electrostatics which people complain about. One, of course, is dispersion at high frequencies; the ribbon was the answer to that. The other thing is level; none of them go loud enough. In order to get level, you need to allow the diaphragms to move far enough. This is basically a question of having the plates far enough apart and getting them sensitive enough so you can get that level out of the speakers without having too big an amplifier. I’ve been listening to a lot of crossover stuff lately, music that manages to bridge those seemingly distant worlds that define my deepest interests. On this side of the ocean, the sweetest pop; on that side, the darkest noise. Oddly enough, Drake has been in heavy rotation. I don't know whose idea this represents—Michel Plante or Sarah Tremblay would be my guess—but it's a great way of signalling that the show is going to be FUN. The charming Claudia L'Ecuyer (pictured) prepared my badge. In the background, getting his badge is Jim Griffin of Griffin Audio, Canadian distributor of ProAc loudspeakers.
Michel Plante, President of SSI, can usually been seen rushing around, dealing with one crisis or another. He somehow injured himself the day before the show's opening (he doesn't know how) to the point that he was on crutches, but this hardly seems to have slowed him down. He took in stride—well, so to speak—jibes about "break a leg" not meant to be taken literally.
