Well, here’s another great video from Grizzly Bear. The band is like a bottomless cup of creativity. How do they do it? Don’t they have record reviews to write? Don’t they have issues to ship to press?
The December 2009 issue of Stereophile is now on newsstands. Our final issue of 2009 includes our annual “Products of the Year” feature. People love this feature. We’re already receiving fun complaints from manufacturers whose products are not pictured in the article, complaints from readers because we only vote on products we’ve actually listened to, complaints from angry moms because we didn’t pick their children to play one of the lead roles in “A Christmas Carol.”

With so many great bands, it’s often the mistakes, or accidents, that make the magic of a live performance. But in the case of Sonic Youth, it’s their simple presence, their plain being, that is magical. I had never before seen a band perform so flawlessly, yet with such pure power and vibrant energy, such love. Theirs was a ferocious accuracy, a blistering precision. Smalls is, well, a small jazz club in New York City’s West Village and, while far from the most comfortable establishment in town, it’s certainly among the most authentic and dedicated. The cover is cheap, the audience is youthful (two facts that are probably related), the musicians are usually the best up-and-coming players, and established masters sit in now and then too.
