The folks at Rhino Records have just released a 180-gram vinyl reissue of The Shape of Jazz to Come, Ornette Coleman’s groundbreaking (and still riveting) album of 1959, mastered at RTI from the original stereo tapes. It sounds in every way better than the original pressing, which itself sounds quite good.

Of course, the Latinists among my readers (all three of them) already know that the ancient Romans would have carved this column's title "PUERNATUSEST." So I sent Lauridsen an e-mail that began "Stop me if you've heard this one . . ." Thirty years have not diminished the beauty and elegance of Oracle's Delphi turntable. In my opinion, it still ranks among the best-looking turntables ever made. I bought an original Mk.I, used, in 1982, and very positively reviewed the Delphi Mk.V in the December 1997 Stereophile.
In its three decades the Delphi has undergone many upgrades both technical and aesthetic. Not surprisingly, so has the price. Oracle's Micro Vibration Stabilizer silicone damping system was designed to diminish, as much as possible, all of these potential problems without reducing the spring suspension's effectiveness. It sounded as if it was working as intended. I could hear the Delphi Mk.VI with MVSS system engaged or not by rotating the three Delrin paddles in and out of the silicone and listening each way. Oracle says that 3.25 turns' worth down into the fluid sounds best. I took their word for it and compared that setting with 0.0 turns.
