When I worked at a classical label back in the '80s, I was talking to a Sony executive and complimented him on the success of Perahia's Mozart piano concerto series. He laughed ruefully, saying, "You have no idea how hard we had to work to make that happen. We released 8 LPs before even one of them was in the black.
