It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Schwing

It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Schwing

Epiphanies only come when you stop looking for them, and mine came in a room full of preschoolers watching cartoons at a Pizza Hut. I was taking my little nieces Alix (4) and Casey (1) out for dinner, and the last thing on my mind was audio; we wanted to PARTY! So my girlfriend Dara and I bundled them up in their car-seats and we high-tailed it over to the Hut, with visions of continuous-loop Tom'n'Jerry and cheap buffet pizza dancing in our heads.

Help to choose acoustic systems

Forums

At me is Arcam alfa 6. By virtue of the different reasons it(he) has moved to a study (14 m2). With it(him) in a sheaf of CD Arcam alfa 5 +. It would be desirable to pick up half-resident students up to 800-1000 $. Music - a jazz and electronic, less often - rock. I understand, that it is necessary to listen, but can such amplifier was at somebody and accordingly there is an experience of selection to it(him) of acoustic systems.

Turntable Question

So I have Technics SL-1300 that I picked up recently. Got it set up with my Denon AVR-1602 receiver and a Rolls pre-amp. Sounds pretty darn good. Only problem is for some odd reason it seems to be picking up some local radio station and reproducing it at a very low amplitude whenever the receiver is set to Phono (well in this case there is no build-in preamp, and therefore no specific Phono setting -- but in essence whenever the receiver is set to the turntabnle input) even if no record is spinning. Is my needle picking up radio frequencies? How do I remedy this? Thanks!

Cable cooking and burn-in

Forums

In general, how long does a cable/interconnect have to stay out of use before a lengthy burn-in is required? This is related not to new cables, but rather cables that have at one time been in use.

Assuming that new cables need around 150 hours, at what point would a previously used cable become completely idle and need this kind of cooking or do they ever need a complete burn-in again?

Anyone else heard Gold Sounds?

Forums

I just heard an advance copy of Gold Sounds by James Carter, Cyrus Chestnut, Ali Jackson, and Reginald Veal (it was released Sept. 27). It's new interpretations of songs by Pavement and I put off listening to it for a while because it sounded like it had to be a gimmick. Boy, was I wrong! It has really good sound and the music--at least in these arrangements--is pretty exciting.

I'm sure I'll end up useing it in reviews, but the print cycle takes so long and you guys should be checking this one out ASAP.
