The Fifth Element #32

The Fifth Element #32

I recently spent a few days filling in for a local engineer, recording middle-school and high-school bands and choral ensembles. This was a requirement of the statewide music-educator adjudication process. (Don't laugh; recording high-school bands is how Telarc got its start.)

NHT Acquired by Vinci Group

NHT Acquired by Vinci Group

Like many specialty audio companies, NHT</A> has had its ups and downs. The Benicia, CA–based loudspeaker manufacturer, founded by Ken Kantor and Chris Byrne in 1986, was sold to Jensen International in the early 1990s, sold again to accesssories perveyor Recoton, and then acquired (and some would suggest saved) by Rockford Corporation towards the end of 2002.

Similar sound to B&W 801D, but cheaper

Forums

Hi all, my first post here.
I've just auditioned the B&W 801D, I loved their sound, specially the bass, but I cannot afford paying U$ 11,000.
So which speaker should I go for, spending around U$ 5,500,
that could give me the same "kind" of pleasure?
I"d just like to point that I don't want towers with horns, as the Klipsh RF5 that I have.

Music Goes Cellular

Music Goes Cellular

In an era when music as instant entertainment enjoys increasing dominance over music as art, cellular phones have emerged as the latest purveyor of music on demand. Issues of sound quality mean little when the goal is to accumulate more and more files at an ever-accelerating pace and have ever easier access to those files.

Vintage Audio

I'm kind of a nostalgic type of person and some of the audio components coming out today to me are simply "crap" especially in the turntable area, their just cookie cutter plastic assembly line trash. I like the older stuff, hand made, wood cabinet and finished which brings me to my question. I want a turntable, something reliable and something that won't have me getting a loan at my local bank. I've seen the Denon PL59's which look phenomenal, does anyone have any other suggestions for other turntables and how they perform?

From the Street, 1.X.1905

On October 1, 1905, Czech worker Frantisek Pavlik was killed during a demonstration. Leos Janacek was so affected by the incident that he hurriedly wrote his one and only piano sonata. But as the well-known story goes, he burnt the third movement before anyone could play it, and threw the first two movements into the Vltava after the first private performance. Fortunately, the pianist copied the score, so now everyone can hear this undoubted and unqualified masterpiece.

Should ethical constraints be imposed on for-profit audio publications?

It's no secret that for-profit audio publications rely heavily on advertising revenue in order to remain profitable and financially solvent. However, unlike (for example) peer-reviewed medical journals, in which the authors of published scientific papers are required to fully disclose any financial links or funding from the pharmaceutical industry, etc., the audio reviewing industry seems to be free from any such ethical or financial disclosures.
