Music Downloads and Apathy

Certain ideas (or memes in Internet jargon) seem to achieve instantaneous critical mass, at least if you judge them by how frequently certain web URLs are transmitted among friends. One article that appeared in our inbox many times this week linked us to research by music psychologist Adrian North of the University of Leicester, who led a team of researchers who monitored 346 people for two weeks, evaluating how they <A HREF="http://www.toptechnews.com/news/Research-Claims-MP3s-Create-Apathy/stor… to music.

XM and MusicGiants Unveil 5.1 Plans

There was at least one story we missed at last week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and that was the announcement of two new plans to provide 5.1 music surround: XM Satellite Radio announced the addition of two 24-hour surround channels to its line-up and download service; MusicGiants announced its intention to add 5.1-channel "high-definition" audio files to its premium subscription service.

Sony Discman

I'm away from my stash of Stereophile back issues, and was just trying to remember what the model # was on that Sony Discman that is supposed to be the steal of the year. (the one Roy Hall hates ) I have to go offshore for a month & obviously cannot take my system with me so that would be the next best thing. Can anyone remember the model number or possibly suggest something equal? I have a Headroom Little and a set of HD 600's to use. It'll be better than the MP3 played through the PA system from the bridge.

Chet Baker: Peace

Forums

For those who are fans of Chet Baker's trumpet playing (but not his singing) I'd like to mention that I recently discovered (through Amazon.com) a very hard-to-find Chet Baker CD titled Peace on the Enja label. This studio session was recorded in NYC in 1982, and remixed in 1987. The musicianship and the audio quality of this CD are outstanding. Peace is a perfect companion to another of Baker's all-instrumental albums, Chet. Enjoy.
