Line Stage vs Route Selector

Forums

Hey All,
I was wondering what the musical differences would be when comparing a Line Stage preamp to just using a route selector from someone like DBX?

I will be using something with my Velleman VAA-70 tube amp which does have a variable output level control.
I'm presently using an Onkyo P-3300 preamp but think a simple line stage preamp would be musically better than the Onkyo.

Yes? No? Maybe?

Even overlooking the woeful sports section and regular incidents of pathetic pandering—a recent travel piece by Robert Kennedy Jr. comes to mind—the institutional psychoses and attitude, subtle as they may be, that the paper infuses, again ever so delicately, into everything is quite amazing.

This rag is a joke! From stupid uninformed political commentary to an in-depth review of a $90k turntable that performs like a Radio Shack "Realistic" unit. 99% of your readers can't afford this overrated junk let alone have an opportunity to actually see it or hear it. I can't wait for the next issue to come in the mail so I can show my coworkers what in Christ's teeth these editors are going to think of or come up with next. One thing that is for sure is that I won't be renewing my subscription. I might as well take a twenty dollar bill and set it on fire.

Losse power cable and channel drop out

Forums

I was experiencing "drop-out" and "fade-out" of one channel, and then sometimes the same with the other channel. I tried everything, including reversing cables. I heard the same problem through my headphones, so it certainly was not speaker/speaker cable related. I then tried a power cable with a very tight IEC connection, and it seems to have solved the problem. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

John Marks sends along this article about the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ, a 32-ton, 6398-pipe, three-story organ that I, for one, am going to have to make a sonic destination. Be sure to visit the photo essay and other links while you're reading about the Cooper organ—there's a ton of fascinating information there.

As a member of the Park Slope Food Coop, I've been seeing signs warning of an international organic banana shortage for months now, but I assumed it was just a seasonal fluctuation, coupled with last year's brutal hurricane season. The New Scientist claims it may be a genetic apocalypse.
