As Quiet as the Day

As Quiet as the Day

Things are quiet now. Kristina's iPod has gone to sleep. Aside from some street noise — a passing siren or a honking horn — the only music in our office comes from the printer. Soon these coarse black and whites will be colorful glossies. These proofs will grow to be the pages you turn.

Jon Carroll: Still a Giant Among Writers

Jon Carroll: Still a Giant Among Writers

Today's Jon Carroll column doesn't exactly answer yesterday's link to Clay Risen's critique of Claire Hoffman's Joe Francis story (man, is this blog getting self-referential or what), but it does neatly expose Risen's glaring flaw: Journalism isn't just one thing.

Prediction

I hereby predict that there will be a resurgence in classical music listening driven by the upcoming generation! Why?

I just read the list of top ten classical albums in the Philadelphia region as published in the Philadelphia Inquirer of August 6, 2006. Listed in spots 2, 7 and 8 are Baby Einstein albums. Surely with all those babies being exposed to classical music through the Baby Einstein series the future is bright for classical music!

Antony Michaelson not backing his products?

I would like to hear from owners of the Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista SACD player about their experiences with their machines. The reason is I've been running into some disturbing news online (most recently Audio Asylum) stating that Mr. Michaelson refuses to back up his product, and evidently, many Tri-Vista SACD owners are being left in the lurch with $6500.00 boat anchors.

Pardon me, this may technically be "fusion," but...

Aloha,

I have to work at the computer sometimes and I like to use my time imprisoned in front of the monitor to spin one disc for several hours to let it seep into my brain and see how my view of it changes.

So, I been spinning Hugh Masakela's "Hope" for a couple days straight and I really like it.

I'd call it something more like South African Fusion that straight jazz, but it's got some good stuff.

If you give it a listen, I finally found a disc where if I say, "lilting melodies," it would seem an acceptable use of the term.

Does Halcro DM38 incorporate Design Improvements featured in DM88?

I read the Stereophile DM88 article with interest, especially the discussion on the upgrades made to the 1st generation Halcro design.

I am in the market for a DM38. In response to my query, Halcro suggested that the DM38 features design refinements that go beyond the DM58/68, refinements that have recently been implemented in the DM78/88. They stopped short of saying that the DM38 has all of the design upgrades featured in the DM78/88.
