National Panasonic SL-18

Hey everybody! I just joined. Need some advice for this turntable i bought. National Panasonic SL-18. The problem is, it's playing too slow. The pitch of the music is half a step lower (half a tone) than it should be. It's not my only turntable, i grabbed it cheap so i could play vinyl in both rooms. Apparently this turntable was unused when i bought it and it looks it. But yeh, i have a speed problem with it. So, is this model adjustable at all? I know of some local turntable specialists which i am going to visit soon but i thought in the meantime, i would ask for some advice online.

Infiniti's New "Studio On Wheels"

Infiniti's New "Studio On Wheels"

Some days I feel like <I>Stereophile</I>'s designated audio antichrist. After all, I wrote an automotive audio column for the magazine about 10 years back&mdash;a feature that prompted more than one reader to send the pages carrying my column back to Santa Fe as "not what I subscribed for"&mdash;<I>and</I> I reviewed the <A HREF="http://stereophile.com/mediaservers/934/ ">iPod</A>. So, not really being a glutton for punishment, I wasn't wildly enthusiastic when Edelman account executive Stefani Gudis tendered an invitation to hear the Infiniti/Bose "Studio On Wheels" model G35 sedan. It wasn't that I didn't think that car audio could be a valid musical experience, I simply had been disappointed too many times by car manufacturers touting "audiophile" sound packages, which, upon examination, were probably more about preventing aftermarket add-ons by car audio installers. BTDT, as the kids text-message.

European Court Annuls 2004 Sony-BMG Merger

European Court Annuls 2004 Sony-BMG Merger

Even though the European Commission okayed the merger of Sony and the Bertlesmann Music Group (BMG) in 2004, Europe's second-highest court&mdash;the Court of First Instance&mdash;annulled the merger on July 13. The decision came about because of a challenge from independent record labels that claimed the EU regulators shouldn't have approved the merger in the first place. This is the first time a European Commission decision has been overturned and it requires the commission to examine the complex merger again.

A Couple of Questions for Sam Tellig

As I recall, you were very fond of the Tivoli PAL - the Henry Kloss designed AM/FM portable. Any particular reason you didn't do a comparison of that radio with the Music Hall RDR-1?

Regarding personal FM transmitters, I certainly agree that one needs to find a spot in the band with no strong adjacent stations. Whether one is, "..certain to find a nice empty spot on the FM dial.." without strong adjacent stations depends on location. In metropolitan Chicago, it's next to impossible.

compression on vinyl

Well, "Gnarls Barkley" was the last straw. A brilliant bit of work IMHO, but compressed to death, to the point where I can't turn it up to near where I'd like to; it's just too unpleasant.

So: Gnarls is available on vinyl. I own 600+ slabs of vinyl, but haven't bought new vinyl in many years. Is there more dynamic range on vinyl, or is it compressed also? Or does it vary from record to record?
