Polk Audio Acquired by Directed Electronics

On August 21, Directed Electronics, Inc. announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Polk Audio for $136 million in cash, with the deal to close in Q3 of 2006. Current Polk management will join Directed, and company founder Matthew Polk and Polk president Jim Herd will sit on Directed's home audio advisory board. File this one under the you can't make this stuff up department: Sandy Gross, founder of Directed's other loudspeaker company, Definitive Technology, already sits on the board, which makes Polk's presence there a homecoming of sorts, since Gross was a founding partner at Polk.

To upgrade or not upgrade to high def dvd player????

Hello, I'm new to this game so forgive me if i ask a dumb question. I've got a Mits DLP big screen, ML speakers, and Sony Tae9000es pre/proc and matching Tan9000es amp. The progressive output on back of Toshiba dvd player no longer works, so i want to replace it with a upgrade player that also handles sacd, dvd-audio, redbook cd's, and of course outstanding video a must. Should i buy a Blue-ray hi def player or wait until more models are offered?? I also want to upgrade my pre/proc and amp with one that has HDMI and is compatible with Blue-ray or any hi def dvd.

Black Orphesus Speaker Cables - Anyone use them?

Forums

I own a pair of Monitor Audio Silver RS6 speakers. I note that when Robert Reina reviewed these speakers in the March 2006 issue of Stereophile, he listed "Acarian Systems Black Orpheus" as the speaker cables he used during the review.

I've read some of his other speaker reviews, and I note that he often (always?) lists Black Orpheus as the speaker cables he has used during a review.

Do any of you use Black Orpheus speaker cables in a bi-wired configuration? If so, what do you think of them? To your ears, what are their positive qualities? their negative qualities?

September on my mind.

Aloha,

Some of the ghosts of recent discussions from here, there, and everywhere seemed to strike me as I went through this month's issue, so I figured I'd see if anyone else got the same feelings:

1) When I see "A Passion For Bass" next to a pick of Alex Smith, I expect the ad to be more about bass fishing gear than subwoofers. Is he related to the Velodyne family or something? I just don't get the connection or relate to the endorsement.

Newbie wanting to learn....?

Hi,
I am new here, and also new to stereo equipment, so I am not a stereophile yet.

If you can direct me to some elemenary articles for beginners, I would greatly appreciate it!

One goal of mine is to incorporate more music into my life.
Since I plan on replacing my furnishings, I may as well make them music frendly.

I won't bore you with extensive details now, because I don't know what exactly is pertinent.
