Bob on Bob

The brouhaha over Bob Dylan's recent Rolling Stone interview surprised me. Dylan cryptic, caustic, and cranky? What a shock. Has he ever held a straightforward interview where he kept on topic? Louis Menand reviews Bob Dylan: The Essential Interviews.

studio monitors for music listening

hi there. so i'm looking for a decent pair of active studio monitors that are going to be used solely for music listening on the computer.

i've read several reviews about these kind of speakers and i just can't decide at all:

-how's the bass response on those speakers? i'm used to those cheap 2.1 systems with a "subwoofer". i don't want a subwoofer but also i fear that studio monitors won't have enough bass "punch".

-what brands would you recommend me? i was thinking on M-Audio, Event and Behringer. the M-Audio DX4's are probably the ones i would choose right now.

Touring Edition

Sorry about that. Kelli and I flew off to Maine. We spent most of our time on Mt. Desert Island. "Desert," in this case, is pronounced "dessert" (with a French accent, if you like). It was good and quiet. We drove along the coast in our pathetic PT Cruiser (Touring Edition), from Portland to Bar Harbor, listening to the new TV on the Radio. It starts off like a Sonic Youth song, but the drums change it all. And then the vocals change it more. Of the words I could make out: Hey hey, my baby / Won't you lay your hands on me / Mirror my malady / Transfer my tragedy. We decided that he really does sound like Peter Gabriel.

Art Dudley's woodies vs fuzzies

I've been thinking about this whole debate between the "objectivists" and "subjectivists" movements that seem to permeate the audiophile ranks and the more I think about it, the less sense it makes to be on either side of the debate.

As I see it, the objectivist movement tries to establish some sort of objective criteria upon which all equipment judging is based, with the "live" sound being the objective standard.
