The Biology of B-Movie Monsters

The Biology of B-Movie Monsters

Being big isn't simple. "Absolute size cannot be treated in isolation; size per se affects almost every aspect of an organism's biology. Indeed, the effects of size on biology are sufficiently pervasive and the study of these effects sufficiently rich in biological insight that the field has earned a name of its own: 'scaling.'"

setting up an audio system using a music server

Cheers,

This is my first post. It stems from the desire to get more out of the music on my computer (on a budget = $1200). My music lives solely on a Windows XP machine which I plan to use as my music server. I am considering the Slim devices squeezebox WiFi D/A processor to chunnel music around my home. I plan on feeding it's output to bookshelf speakers from either PSB or Polk through an integrated amplifier (a cheap one from NAD?). I listen mainly to alternative rock and trance. Any thoughts..? Thanks in advance.

What's up with Stereophile?

Subscription started Jan 05, 6 months into subscription, starts receiving soliciting reminders from J.Chandler to renew my subscription with messages like "Last chance for two year savings", "Rush renewal form", etc. etc. etc.

This is one of my biggest "hot buttons".

However I understand the need to secure subscription base, fee, revenue and above all, "customer service" and all that jazz.

So that's where the "garbage bin" is useful.

Except - September issue is missing!

In the new study of brain activity, volunteers silently read phrases describing movements involving one of three body parts. All of the phrases activated movement-related regions in the left frontal cortex—presumably the ones responsible for moving the body part in question.

British Library on DRM and the Law

British Library on DRM and the Law

"DRM is a technical device, but it's being used in an all-embracing sense. It can't be circumvented for disabled access or preservation, and the technology doesn't expire (as traditional copyright does). In effect, it's overriding exceptions to copyright law,"said Lynne Brindley, chief executive of the British Library.

Diffusers or Absorbers behind the speakers?

I'm in the process of treating my listening room's acoustics. After doing some research, it looks like some are of the opinion that one must 'kill' the first reflections by placing sound absorbers right behind the speakers. Others prefer to put diffusers right behind them. Which approach is right? I'm definately going to put diffusers (3 Furutech panels) on the wall behind the listening couch, heavy curtains (velvet) on the side walls to cover up glass windows. I have relly high ceilings, about 15 feet. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks,
