A.J. van den Hul calls the Black Beauty a phono cartridge "just for friends." In a way, this Black Beauty <I>was</I> made specially for me&mdash;it's been tweaked for an undamped linear-tracking arm. Says so right here on the box: "<I>Forsell Version</I>." But before you explode, know that Mr. van den Hul will be pleased to do the same for you. He'll adjust the suspension of any Black Beauty&ndash; or Grasshopper-series cartridge for your arm and 'table. Or, should you specify, for "the preamp and load impedance, a particular brand of records to be played, the type of music generally played (jazz being more dynamic and classical more spacious and detailed), and other personal/sound preferences."

Squarewave measurements

Forums

Hello!

I've been reading stereophile for a while and beeing an audio student I specially enjoy the serious measurements in the magazine versus the subjective perpection.

I wonder, however, if it wouldn't be interesting instead of only showing the spectra of a 1kHz sinewave, to also show the spectra of a 1kHz squarewave. I think that the even harmonics that would eventually show up also indicate a level of a non-linearity that isn't displayed elsewhere. What do you think about it!?

Regards,

L.

Speaker Connections

I am new to this forum, and I have a question for you experts. I have an old Bell & Howell speaker that goes with a small tube amplifier. The speaker outs are something I have never seen before. They are half inch round plugs with two holes. Both ends of the cable would need to be male ends. The person I bought this from is a stereophile, and he had never seen anything like it. His temporary solution was to rig the cable with two bent over nails. This isn't exactly ideal for sound quality or safety. Any help on these connectors or an original cable would be great.

Filmosound Amplifier

I have an old Bell & Howell amplifier that I am trying to rebuild. It is a 15 watt filmosond amplifier, and I would love to clean it up, but I can't find any information about it. I would love some schematics, or a copy of the owners manual. Any help would be great. I would love to save this little piece of equipment.

Mstislav Rostropovich (1927–2007)

"Slava" has died. The great Russian cellist, known as much for his defiance of the Soviet oligarchy as for the more than 170 compositions dedicated to him, had been hospitalized in Paris at the end of January, but chose to fly to Moscow shortly thereafter to spend his last months in his beloved homeland. He is survived, not only by his two daughters and his wife and frequent collaborator, the soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, but also by the huge number of recordings that attest to his eloquence.
