Rolling the Stones

Rolling the Stones

Has Scorsese made the ultimate up-close-and-personal documentary about the Rolling Stones? While I'm sure it's a good concert movie, I'm not sure there is any reality to the Stones any more. As a student of film, Scorsese knows that when the legend becomes fact, you shoot the legend.

The Last Delta Bluesman

The Last Delta Bluesman

Garth Cartwright profiles David "Honeyboy" Edwards on the eve of his European tour. He heard Charley Patton and Tommy Johnson, the musicians regarded as Delta blues founders, play when he worked on a plantation. Big Joe Williams taught him music and how to hobo. He busked with the Memphis Jug Band, hung out with a teenaged Howlin' Wolf, and recorded for Alan Lomax. And in 1945 he took Little Walter to Chicago.

Parasound preamp/power amp?

Forums

I've been thinking lately about upgrading my Harman Kardon HK3475 stereo receiver to a preamp/power amp setup. I've been looking specifically at the Parasound Model 275 power amp in combination with the Parasound Model 2100 preamp since this combination falls within my budget. I've read some nice things about Parasound gear but I can't find much information on their "New Classic" line.

Bend Over

Bend Over

For good measure alone, Critics, particularly the cranky ones like I've recently become, all deserve a well–placed boot up the arse once in awhile and so, much to my delight I too loved much of The Simpsons movie I prematurely sniffed at last week on this forum. I even get to add this delicious addendum: The critics are wrong! It's pretty wonderful. Many great bits. Much self-deprecation. Maggie emerging as a full–blown character. Okay, okay: I was wrong.

Music Hall A25.2 - Monitor Audio Silver RS6 ?

I've just purchased a pair of Monitor Audio Silver RS6 speakers. Now I'm trying to pick a cheap integrated amplifier (my budget is around 500US). At first, I thought I would go for the NAD C352 but since I may not need much power, my local store recommended the NAD 325BEE (or even the old 320BEE). Arcam also has the reputation to pair well with Monitor Audio and I'm considering the Diva A65 (in fact, I was only able to try my speakers with the A80 so far and it sounded good to my unexperienced ears). Another match could be the Cambridge Audio 640A.

Dyanmic range: CD v. LP

A number of people have claimed that the dynamic range of a given recording is often better on LP than on CD. Is this really true?

This would mean that there are two different mastered versions of the same recording: one intended for release on CD; the other, on LP.

Do labels really master two different release versions and put different versions on CD than on LP?
