Playing small

This is not a rant, rave or complaint but a suggestion. I have my system set up in a rather small room. I listen nearfield, actually about 5-6 feet from the speakers. As a result I listen at modest volumn levels.

I was reading a competing magazine the other day and read something I had not seen before. The reviewer noted how the system sounded when played at low levels.

Ancient Subwoofer

Forums

I own a 20 year old Sony SA-W30 powered subwoofer. Ths thing has an automatic on/off switch that activates when it receives a signal. I have two problems with it. One, in the half dozen moves from country to country and state to state I have made with it, I have lost the manual. Second, unless the video receiver is playing at a loud level, this sub turns itself on and off with a loud thump a half dozen times a song. I have played with the reveivers crossover settings and have played with every adjustment on the sub. Is there a way to simply turn the thing on and leave it on.

Good low budget amp for polk audio RTi4

Hi,

1) I'd like to know if these old amplifiers (Lxi & Philips)are of any good compared to new ones nowadays. I know very little about amplifier. So, please kindly explain in layman terms. What are the differences between the new ones and these old ones?

2) I've purchased a pair of Polk audio RTi4 2 days ago. Will it be a waste to match them with these old amp?

3) If they aren't good enough for these speakers. Are they worth discarding? Are there any alternative usage?

Apogee MiniGrand Saga, Part 1

After spending this Spring rebuilding two pair of The "New" Advent speakers, I got the bug to work on my Apogee Mini Grands.

When I first purchased these about 7 years ago, the frame was slightly roughed-up. I initially be-built the crossovers, using Alpha-core inductors, Bybee Slipstreems, Axon caps, and Holand Bypass caps http://www.northcreekmusic.com/Bypassing.html

Instilling the love of music in my 11 old daughter

(When my daughter was 6 I instilled the love of reading by taking her to the book store and letting her find her own books to read. Now she's 11 and I want to do the same with music.)

I'm looking to get the most music enjoyment for each dollar spent. Maximum bang for the buck per say...

Going to the record shop to shop for music just isn't going to work. It's like me trying to buy a bottle of wine. So it's going to have to be iTunes for Rachel.

Improving iTunes for music discovery (use a better DAC)

(I know that any compressed format isn't going to do the original justice. But...)

I use the iTunes store for a lot of music discovery and have found that adding an inexpensive MSB Link DAC III is a big improvement over the DAC in an iPod or computer.

Mac's can connect directly to the DAC through a TOSLINK connection. PC's need something like a Transit.

What do you do for music discovery?
