Anybody an aficionado of 'height?'
I'm not talking Amy Acuff, either.
Height in your sound reproduction.
I tend to maybe lean toward it when I can, but it one of the 'lesser' sound gods for me.
I'm wondering if people have some favorite recording that really seem to get it right, and whether or not you audition new gear listening for that characteristic.
I was recently listening to Robbie Robertson's 'third or fourth newest' solo album (from 1987, damn it I'm old) and it's loaded with height cues. Layers of 'em!
Aloha,
Any of y'all ever met up with a kindred spirit by virtue of the hard copy of Sterophile?
I've had two issues gift me with long term buddy-ship.
July 1992 issue: I was working at UCLA and had a friend in the same field but in another division, and on July first each year, a new 'fellow' would rotate in for one that left. My friend Mike was a holdover, and I went down to hang with him and next to his desk was the desk of the 'new guy.'
I just recently found how amazing vinyl can sound on a road trip I took with a few friends and heard the true quality that I was missing from a record in a small ma pop restaurant.
Since then, I have been hunting down records for songs that I love (sam cooke, nina simone, delfonics, cooke, redding, sinatra, and newer artists etc etc) and am extremely excited to hear them and feel all that I've been missing.
Unfortunately, I am clueless, and hate the idea of posting this thread because the amount of these generic 'help me' threads must be staggering.
I got a new pair of Pinnacle Black Diamond BD-1000 speakers. I don't know much about these speakers, but they were free so I figured they'd make a good replacement for my Infinity OVTR3 speakers that have 50% cracked and busted speaker cones. I was right, the BD-1000's do sound a lot better than my busted Infinity speakers.
Once in awhile I go to www.cdjapan to purchase some high quality Japanese CD's at a better price than on Amazon. Recently I have been seeing this:
Reissue features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD players).
Does anyone know about this and is it really better than standard CD's?
I am still looking for a new preamp, and was wondering if anyone here owns, or has heard the Parasound Halo 3? Any input on it would be great as I'm seriously considering buying one.
