The Savage Detectives

By Roberto Bolano. Has anyone read it? I'm just 100 or so pages in, but it strikes me as a very important novel. I'm loving it. I sit on the train on my way to and from work, reading it, laughing out loud, seeming crazy to the pretty blond girl across the way, wanting to share the words with her:

Metamorphosen?

Forums

Hola,

I've been trying to dig Branford Marsalis' new disc, Metamorphosen, but I just can't get there.

I love Branford, and Trio Jeepy is a demo quality performance, but this new one is somewhere between Spyro Gyra and Kenny G.

What up, Branford?

I am open to being won over by someone explaining what I'm missing, but this one would rate a 'pass' from me.

paging May, would like to try some foil please.

Hi may, I've been to your website and have seen your offer of trying some cd foil. Unforunately it seems the only to contact you is with outlook express, which I know from past experience no longer works for me, dunno why.

So I hope you do not mind me asking this way. (BTW, do you still supply samples of it??)

What I do want to say upfront is that tbh I am quite skeptical that it will do anything, and the reason I say that is if that makes you think it is not worthwhile sending me any then I do understand, what would be in it for you.

On Banning Ourselves

I receive a surprising number of requests from forum members asking (or, even more surprising, demanding) that I ban another forum member. I have no sympathy for this.

JA has suggested a rule, which I find quite attractive:
No forum member can request the banning of another member without also being banned.

How does that sound?

Important, the two DHS right wing extremist reports

In July of 2008 the DHS released a report on right wing terrorism to the security and police services. In April they released a NEW report to the same folk...both, of course, were leaked. Here are links to both reports:

"Stygian"

I don't know if it's just me but have other people noticed different writers over-using the word "Stygian" to refer to deep bass from speakers, etc.? Is this a newly coined cliche or has it always been used in audio-speak? It's pretty lame and annoying. Aside from the fact that Styx runs in the mythological "under"world (har har), what the hell does it have to do with bass? Did the sound of its waves register at 16 Hz according to Hesiod or something?

Now on Newsstands: Stereophile, Vol.32 No.6

The June 2009 issue of Stereophile is now on newsstands. At first, I was against the green border and font for the front cover, favoring a red and orange motif instead, but I now think the green treatment looks excellent. It is appropriate for spring, and the Klipsch Palladium P-39F loudspeaker seems to leap right from the page. Like a (really freaking) gigantic squirrel leaping from the branch of a blossoming tree.
