My wife and I were just at an audio dealer yesterday afternoon checking out tuners. But we were only able to convince ourselves to purchase an old Chicago album for 8 bucks. We listened to the album - not their best effort - and just as the last track was finishing, the turntable motor died. At first we thought that it was part of the music, but had to laugh when we discovered it was the turntable. Har Har.

That's just a long winded way of saying we need a new TT. My budget is less than $2000 cartidge not included.

I acquired a headshell/cartridge alignment jig for my Philips 212 TT. The Grado cart body is about 1/8" -3/16" too shallow for optimum VTA, but the Grado install instructions say NOT to put anything between the cart and headshell- even to obtain the best VTA. Must be a compliance/resonance issue?

...A conclusion I just came to, after comparing two DVD players. My quest in the last few days, was to find a basic upscaling DivX supported DVD player for a friend of mine (preferably with USB port because hey, why not...), to mate with the new HDTV. Never been much of a "videophile", but as an audiophile, I still wanted to make an effort to obtain the best video and audio performance from what might be available in this area (in brick and mortar shops). I thought about getting a Toshiba, but the reviews on their poor reliability record scared me out of that option.
