Stereophile's Products of 2009

Stereophile's Products of 2009

I was sitting in the main listening room of In Living Stereo, a small Manhattan hi-fi shop nestled between Greenwich Village and the East Village, when my conversation with store owner Steve Mishoe turned to the economy's current dismal state. In the face of slow sales, Mishoe had noted an encouraging trend: Because we have less money to spend, we want to make sure that what money we do spend goes for products that not only deliver the thrill of something new, but also promise enduring quality. If this is true, then we have reason to celebrate. By shifting our focus from the so-called "latest and greatest" to that which will provide lasting enjoyment, we set ourselves up for some real happiness and fun. Editor John Atkinson had this in mind 17 years ago, when he began our "Products of the Year" ritual. He felt it important to distinguish the truly good products from all the flashy pretenders that too often win the affections of our capricious hearts.

"Dazed and Confused" over formats

I have to say that this is the most frustrating time in the 30 years spent on this hobby. Finally, after 30 years, CD playback has reached a maturity level that I thought would never come. The quality of music coming from my system is the best it has EVER been.

Now, however, everyone is cutting back there CD inventory. It is essentially disappearing. Borders has reduced their inventory to almost nothing. Virtually every company has cut back drastically.

Fireplace

Is there potential damage placing speakers (Dali Ikon 6) on either side of a fireplace? It's a gas fireplace, and each speaker would be off-set about 8-12 inches from the side of the fireplace.

I am concerned that the heat may damage the wood, or may affect the components inside.

Thoughts?

My first needle drop - lessons learnt

Okay, so I finally did it, I transcribed an LP to digital (aka a 'needle drop'). It was a slightly frustrating, although ultimately rewarding experience which I thought I would share with you here. I trawled around a little on this forum beforehand to see if I could find any useful tips but gave up pretty quickly. The advice on offer seemed to mostly fall into two camps: "buy XYZ USB turntable/phono stage" or "don't bother/buy the CD" and I had no intention of doing either. Here is a short description of what I did do and a couple of lessons learnt along the way.
