Now On Newsstands: Stereophile, Vol.33 No.8

The August 2010 issue of Stereophile is now on newsstands. The cover, with its mellow tones, is one of my favorites. To a greater degree than any other cover we’ve released, this one got a buzz going around the office. People would walk by and say nice things. I hope the cover works the same magic for people browsing the newsstands.

Buried

You might say that brown boxes serve as a metaphor for our lives here at Stereophile. Some days are fuller than others. Right now, I’m buried.

Republicans committing political suicide in Arizona

I just heard a very interesting thing about Arizona on the radio.
It kind of goes like this.
In Arizona the Republican candidates are fighting to see who can look the toughest nut on the right wing block.
Meanwhile Hispanics are the fastest growing section of the community.
Whilst 80% of those described as "old" are white, only 40% of children are white.
As a Hispanic Republican activist commented, if the GOP wants to alienate a family oriented, religious, socialist hating section of people, it will certainly not help their election hopes.

PC to Reciever music

I recently purchased a fiber Optic cable to hook my PC up to my Receiver. However, the sound quality is noticeably worse. The music often sounds flat, faint, distant, unbalanced and lacking the richness that I get from my cd player, which is also hooked up to my receiver.
My sound card is Realtek HD and my receiver is a Denon, but before the days of HDMI (if that even makes a noticeable difference). Most of my digital music is in wav format. I've attempted to fiddle with the equalizer, bass and treble on my receiver, but the improvement is only marginal. Any suggestions?

Receiver and EQ Questions

I currently have my Sony STR-DE425 hooked up to a pair of Definitive Pro Studio 450 speakers. When listening to music there is a distinct lack of bass. I currently listen to CD's through my Panasonic DVD-S47, though I've tried a number of different CD players, plus my ipod, and they all have the same lack of bass. Since I listened to the speakers in the store before I bought them, and they sounded really good, I assume it must be a problem with my receiver. My first question is why do you think this is? Why does this receiver put out a severe lack of bass?

Focal Maestro Utopia III loudspeaker Measurements

Considering that the crates they're shipped in are each as large as a Manhattan studio apartment, once they'd been set up in my listening room, Focal's Maestro Utopia III speakers weren't as visually overpowering as I'd anticipated. The elegant dark-gloss front baffles, the gloss-gray side panels, and the fact that the speaker's three subenclosures are vertically arrayed so that the top, midrange section is angled down, significantly reduced their apparent size.
