I just remembered this guy...he burned himself alive in 2006 to protest the Iraq war. He was an avid Jazz recordist, and his license plates were inscribed with the name of his favorite mics...AKG 414s. I wish I could find recordings by him..
Check out his story

I updated my computer and found all my turntable accesorries in storage (due to the flood) and set out to rip a lp last night. It was Bad Benson, a pre-fame record by George Benson on CTI. I had a problem with some hashy interference that stopped once I shut down most everything on the computer besides the recording software.
Stephen's post in his blog under the title "A first system" intrigued me. The questions he poses later in thread commentary "how did you get into it?", "why did you get into it?" and "how have you gotten to where you are now" are irresistible to new-starters like myself. Could it be that someone with the kind of exposure Stephen has had to the wonderful world of insanely high-end HiFi - actually cares about the lowly budget bottom-end systems that the largest percentage of hobbyists like myself acquire?
Surely not.
Anybody have any experience with these?

I was taken by the comments made by Dan from Detroit in last week's poll "Should Stereophile review more or fewer computer audio products?" This young man made some thought-provoking points. Like others who voted in the poll, I love disc-spinners of every variety and all the associated components. My college age Son loves the old man's stereo too, but approaches the hobby much the same as Dan from Detroit. Could this be the fabled "Black Swan"?
The new David Dyrne Fatboy Slim two disc musical set themed around Imelda Marcos is....well...it's like letting Paul make a Beatles record with no feedback about how it's going.
It's got its high points, but the sum is less than the total of its parts.
It even has a Heart guitar line in one song - point off.
Time for David and Jerry and Tina and Chris to get back together and see where they might go next.
This disc is a 5.
