Best DVD Commentaries

Now that I don't review DVDs professionally, I almost never watch the commentary tracks. Like most folks, I feel I could use that time watching a movie I've never seen before&mdash;yet, a few (a very small few) of 'em are interesting or amusing. I think my favorite was Randy Newman's commentary for <I>Pleasantville</I>, which came off as an insider's view of the Hollywood scoring community (his uncles Lionel and Alfred were both film composers).

Hybrid SCAD/CD

I have been reading for years about how wonderful the Bill Evans Trio / Waltz for Debby album is, so I bought the Analogue Productions SCAD/CD hybrid disk, plus the Sunday at the Village Vanguard album. The music is great, but at least on my system, using a standard CD player, the imaging is terrible. The drums and bass emanate from the left speaker, and the piano emanates from the right speaker, with essentially total separation. Audience sounds do appear to emanate from center stage.
