Oh, Horrid Mis-Insertion!

Oh, Horrid Mis-Insertion!

I mentioned that I'd had some trouble getting the Shure SE310 in-ear headphones to fit comfortably, and I wanted to experiment with different nozzle sleeves. Removing the sleeves from the SE310s took more effort than I'd imagined. Not that it was difficult like it can be difficult to carry a 50-lb amp up three flights of stairs, but more that it was tricky like it can be tricky to cajole speaker cable from a tight grip in a small space. I suppose it's a good thing that the sleeves hug their nozzles with such dedication. You wouldn't want them slipping off in your ear.

Tone Controls (or the lack there of)

A topic I don't recall seeing discussed here...
Over the years I have heard so many reasons as to why "audiophile" pre-amps/integrated amps lack tone controls. (Yes, I know there are a few [MacIntosh] that have them.)
I'm sure there are a variety of reasons as to why. I have my own thoughts on the subject but would like to hear from those more informed, than myself.

I would really like to know!

Wolf Music

R. Murray Shafer's Wolf music and The Princess of the stars are audiophile delights. Make sure to check them out if you ever get a chance. Wolf music was a recording done at a nature reserve in Northern Ontario. Apparently there were B&K mics all around the lake as well as microphones in canoes ON the lake. This could've been a nightmare but the mixing & mastering of the performances are world class. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of hearing this aural treasure as I did.

So how do you know it's time to upgrade?

Having made the jump to hi-fi this year with the Arcam Solo and the Paradigm 100 speakers was one of the best decisions that I ever made. I even created a site (www.richshifi.com) so that I could share my experiences with others (Don't worry Steve it is not meant as competition to your site !). So the question then becomes when/how do you know it's time to take it to the next level. For example I am looking at a Jeff Rowland integrated amp for $5900 and wondering..OK for $5900 what am I really going to get?
