"There exists an inverted class of audiophiles who claim that the sound of vinyl, i.e. records played with a contact stylus, is superior to the sound of compact discs or other digital music - a interesting school of thought given the analogue/digital audio debate.
An anonymous wag, in the tradition of The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce, once defined such an audiophile as someone who listens to the stereo, not the music. Indeed, there are even people who collect and assemble such systems with no goal of even listening to music!"

As we transition from one format to another, some components hang on as our main source of music. What is the source component you use most in your home system?

Keith Howard's article on this topic is good, but it only discusses horizontal alignment, i.e. overhang and offset angle. He fails to address azimuth, which in my experience often proves to be equally important. I would like to see this addressed, along with perhaps stylus rake angle (SRA) and VTA, which also are important. Perhaps Michael Fremer could contribute.
I've loved it since the day I got it last year, but I decided to move it from my mid-level multichannel setup (though I always just used the front channels for iPod music) into my very modest office setup (Onkyo surround amp with $100 bookshelf speakers). Holy crap, it sounds like I just got a new system!
It went from a dull, restricted range, with washed out details to REAL music coming out! Man- I guess it really is the source after all.
