I based my conjecture on the Cantata's behavior with Ethernet data on what I had found with the Linn Magik DS-I (www.stereophile.com/content/linn-majik-ds-i-da-integrated-amplifier-john-atkinson-april-2011). Ethernet seems to be the optimal way of streaming serial data to a DAC.

"Ethernet seems to be the optimal way of streaming serial data to a DAC." - Something Squeezebox users have been saying for quite awhile.
for the reply and reference, I'll look at that review.
One thing I've noticed is that ethernet (at least 10/100, haven't tried gigbit) bogs at high-rez multichannel, for that I need to use HDMI as the input.
