Why phono in my amplifier sounds horrible?

I found a great deal on an amplifier (kenwood ka-7020), 40 bucks, can you help me figure out whether it works or not?

output device: smartphone, speakers: cheap computer speakers (I'm just testing it out with first things I could reach)

There's inputs horizontally (RCA): AUX CD PHONO TUNER
-all sound fine except phono that sounds horrible, could it be that this model has an optional phono chip that its missing or that Im missing something? Or does it indicate this thing is damaged
(while other inputs are close to each other, phono is located much lower than the others)

Theres what I assume are outputs, horizontally (RCA) 6 pairs:

REC/OUT
TAPE3/ADAPTOR
PLAY/
IN

REC
TAPE/
DAT 2
PLAY

REC
TAPE/
DAT 1
PLAY

Or, actually, I guess the one on the top is the only one that's supposed to be an OUT... Which explains why I cant use others for outputting...

Ok... So, I guess the only Questions I have are those already articulated regarding phono input...

Any ideas?

Does it have a built-in phono
Does it have a built-in phono preamplifier? I bet it does, and you're trying to test it with a line-level input. At best that won't work; at worst you may already have damaged it. I don't know this amplifier; do the research yourself: Does it have a built in phono-preamplifier?
