I have recently acquired a new amp setup for my hybrid 2 channel/HT setup (90% 2 channel) having traded in my much loved McIntosh MC205 5 channel amp for 3 PS Audio Stellar M700 monoblocks and an S300 stereo pair for the rears. I made the jump because I realized I was missing some resolution and detail with my Mac and bought the PS Audio units after having read a few glowing reviews and many user comments on forums. And, boy, am I glad I did! These units blow the Mac out of the water. They are simultaneously much more dynamic and possess much greater detail and neutrality than the Mac. These units have none of the usual class D amp characteristics of brittle treble with lack of holographic imaging and problematic speaker interactions. These just sound right with incredible musicality across the board. I was wondering why there aren't a ton of reviews on the Stellar monos? Paul McGowan says part of the problem is that it's hard to get the audiophile press excited about a reasonably priced component like the Stellar series at $1499 per piece. I find this ridiculous! One of the problems with this hobby, IMO, is the way the press fawns over stratospherically priced units (i.e. D'agostino monos at $25,000 per) and ignores the more reasonably priced units like the PS Audio M700s. I'd bet that these monoblocks outperform many monos out there in the $10,000+ price range, but you'd never know it from the scant reviews out there. I think PS Audio should have priced these to match that of the Bel Canto REF600m at $5k for the pair! Several I have heard of have switched from the Bel Cantos and find the M700s superior and are $2k less for the pair. So do us a favor, Stereophile. Please review the Stellar series inclusing the M700 monoblocks and compare to the Bel Canto units. Herb Reichert gushed about the performance of the Bel Cantos and my guess is that he'd do the same for the M700s!
For the record I play both digital and vinyl sources with digital coming from Roon enabled and optimized Mac Mini to PS Audio Directstream DAC (with Red Cloud update - amazing!). My analog is Fern & Roby Montrose turntable with Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC Star cart through Gold Note PH-10 phono preamp, which is fantastic. All of this runs through my Anthem AVM60 pre/pro and ultimately my B&W 804 D3 speakers with dual JL Audio Fathom 110.v2 subs. These B&W's love these amps!
