Serial numbers are unique to each individual manufactured product, just like the VIN (vehicle identification number) on your car. The fact that the serial number on your Linn is visible and resembles a search result indicates that it's genuine. Usually you can call the manufacturer and have them confirm the authenticity.
Actually, that is a complete system in one box; amplifier, CD player, etc.
All you need is speakers to make it a complete system.
You should read the review/article that Stereophile did on it in 2000.

If I were to decide to sell the player, what would be a good forum to try? I'm inclined to try Craigslist, but would probably like to avoid eBay.
Audiogon is the place you are going to find where people will value it properly...secondarily eBay.
