Plaxico Burress owned a gun. Perfectly fine exercise of his Second Ammendment rights. he's a prominent guy and potential trouble target, so he packs some personal heat. Burress even had an (expired) concealed carry (CCW) license from Florida, but no New York license. Still, he went to the trouble of trying to abide by gun laws, when he could.
So, he is minding his own with his homies at a local club when the gun slides down his leg and as he goes to grab it, he accidentally shoots himself in the leg.
He'll now do two years in a crib with bars on the doors.
Moving on, Michael Vick is involved in some recreational betting, and goes Ncdrawl on a few dogs who aren't living up to his expectations - 23 month sentence.
Now, it gets good...
Donte Stallworth killed a man with his Bentley. He says that he flashed his car's headlights to warn Reyes before striking him. So, it's not like he didn't see him. Also, Stallworth was legally drunk at the time of the accident; news sources reported that his blood alcohol content was 0.12, over Florida's legal limit of 0.08.
Now THAT is a crime, for sure!
Two years for Plax, about two years for Vick, this should add up to decades for Donte, right?
Donte pleads guilty to manslaughter and has already completed his jail sentence, having served 24 days in the slammer.
The NFL players' message to you is: Killing a man? No big deal. Carry a personal weapon and hurt only yourself, or gamble and hurt dogs - then you gots troubles.
