I found this site after reading articles "Listening #120 and #121" by Art Dudley. My dad was an avid audiophile and in the 60's he built his own cabinet and plinth for the Rek O Kut Jr. L-34 paired with some enormous HealthKit speakers which he customized with the help of some friends at Berkeley. He died in 1984 and the turntable has not been used since then. I'd like to find a good home for it with people who will give it a new life. I was ready to send it off to Mr. Dudley but can't find a way to contact him directly. I am in Southern California (Riverside), any suggestions for a local group that might have someone interested in it? The base is walnut and must weight about 20 lbs, so shipping might get costly. While I'm typing I'll add a link to photos of the Heathkit speakers. I'm keeping them for now because they sound incredible, and they remind me of my dad whose favorite comment was, "doesn't it sound like you're listening to a live performance?". I'm not sure what I expected when I opened up the back, but it looks a bit like a high school science experiment. Can anyone shed light on this construction? I know virtually nothing about sound systems, so basic layman terms would be appreciated. All I know is that the large metal piece protruding from the back of one speaker cabinet is highly magnetic, as it caught and held the screwdriver used near it. Here is a link to photos of my dad's Frankenstein speakers:

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this inquiry, please let me know if I should post somewhere else.

Interestingly, the cabinets appear to be a near-clone of the Wharfedale W70D speakers, which I had for a number of years, and were quite popular in that era.

I suggest that you get in touch with the Los Angeles/Orange county Audio Society, which has over 1000 members locally. You can visit www/laocas.com or call Bob Levi at 714-281-5850.

Thank you for the contact information for the LA/Orange County Audio society. I've already ordered a pre-amp and new stylus for the turntable just to see if it still works properly, so I guess I'm officially a hobbyist now. I'll probably end up keeping it.

Great. Now join the club and come to "THE" show in Newport Beach next month. You will enjoy it, I'm sure.
