Would someone be able to explain how volume leveling works? Specifically, I have ripped CDs to WMA Lossless and applied volume leveling through Windows Media Player. Does this action change the data in the file? Or, is the dynamic range of the original file intact, but volume leveling happens on the fly, so to speak, without altering the original file?
Why do I ask (beside liking to know how things work)? I am thinking of using Winamp or perhaps another program for playback instead of WMP. Will it recognize the volume leveling applied/added by WMP or do I need to have the new program analyze the files and apply volume leveling again?
An explanation on how volume leveling works and its effect on the original file would be very helpful to me.
