tube preamp for $1,300 is sure to please. Five inputs (Three RCA, one is XLR and another is 1/8" mini-jack) and two variable RCA outputs, one fixed RCA output and an XLR output. Why muck up the works with unneeded tone controls? The Underwood HiFi/Parts ConneXion Level 1 modified unit is even better for $1,750. If you can spring it the Level 2 mods will get you $2,200 preamp which performs like one which costs $5,000.
Well I got the Vincent SA-31MK preamp, and I'm very pleased. It sounds great, more expansive and spacious, more detailed, and more gutsy.
I wasn't unhappy with my Adcom GFP-710 and I would still recommend it. But after steeling myself to pay the price for an upgrade, well, it's worth it. Phew.
I am "burning it in" by keeping it on all the time for now. But it sounded great right out of the box.
