Hello everyone! I just joined up after checking out some of the posts here and was excited to hopefully pick your brains for my setup.
Just so you know, I *really* have no idea where to even begin, but am determined to learn. With that, I'm going to just give some of the hard facts of what I currently have, what I need to hook up to my new system, and finally what I'm hoping to accomplish with this now and in the future.
1. What I currently have:
- Harmon Kardon receiver that must be at least 13 years old.
- A Sony DVD player
- A Comcast digital cable box
- A Squeezebox networked player
- A Toshiba Regza 42" 1080p LCD HDTV
- A thrashed pair of Boston Acoustics floor speakers (A70). With these, the cones are fine but the "other" part has ripped away from the cone.
2. What I'm required to hook up to the new system:
- The Tivo.
- A DVD player
- Some way of playing CDs
- The TV (in whatever way to get the sound working through the speakers)
- The digital cable box needs to be hooked up to the TV
3. What I'm trying to accomplish:
First things first, my current system basically doesn't get use. The speakers recently ripped at that styrofoam looking space so I figured I shouldn't use them just in case I can fixed them (whether they are worth saving is up in the air). The room I'm putting these in is a small condo living room that is maybe 12 x 15 feet, but we're moving into a house soon and the space for this will be roughly double the size.
I'll also finally be making the plunge into a Blu Ray player since that has been finally resolved (or at least I have read as such) and would like to have everything pump directly to the receiver instead of the *terrible* way I do it now because the H/K can't take the more modern video feeds.
Lastly, and this is purely optional, my new computer I purchased is actually a media server and it would be nice to be able to hook this up as well, but it's certainly not necessary. I'm sure some of you cringe at the idea of compressed music flowing through your sound system, but in terms of merely being able to quickly create a good mix when people come over.
Oh, you're probably going to ask what my budget is for something like this. I'm not exactly sure, but let's put it down at $2,000 for right now and I might alter this depending on what feels necessary and how good you guys can sell me on stuff.
I suspect I haven't given all of the information you need to make great suggestions but I figured I'd start with this because this is all of the pertinent data I can think of and I wanted to jump into this head on instead of sitting on this any longer.
Last thing: if there is good reading material for me to peruse I will certainly read it. Especially if it's regarding definitions so I don't have to continually ask "What does xxx mean again?" and start annoying the very people I seek help from.
Thank you very much for reading this far and for anyone who is willing to help me out.
