I have forwarded your problem to our webmaster. I wonder if it is due to the fact that this is connected with our changing to a secure site format, ie, the URL now starts https not http. We spent 2 weeks before we went live at the end of last week trying to break it without success, but it appears that you did so. Color our faces red.

There may have been OTHER upgrades/updates made WHILE you were updating from HTTP to HTTPS. Usually, update "packages" pack a lot of them.
On that older computer, I can run almost all HTTPS sites just fine including PayPal and banking.
While we're on the topic of the Stereophile / TEN web sites, I have noted pretty heavy CPU usage--probably due to ads. Even on a relatively new Win. 10 computer, TEN sites will freeze and may even crash Chrome if I've got multiple tabs open.
According to our IT department, the problem lies with the older version of Chrome you are using on that computer. As you wrote in your first postings, "Google (owner of Chrome) no longer supports updates to its browser for older Windows (e.g., Vista)."
Because the ads are sourced from third-party servers, they do sometimes take too long to load. A few years back, we changed the way our sites load so that users don't have to wait for all the ads to load before they can read the content.
I haven't had the problem with Firefox on a MacBook Pro and a Windows 7 PC. Will try both with Chrome and see if I can replicate the problem.

I'm using Firefox to post this reply. Google/Chrome no logner updates for Win. Vista and prev.
I don't like Firefox at all on this older computer -- it's very CPU intensive.
Most other HTTPS sties still work fine w/Chrome on my current computer--TEN sites are by far the exception.
As far as older operating systems and Chrome ... on YouTube there's a video on how CERN still uses Win XP. For many libraries and organizations, it's too costly to upgrade -- it seems ironic for multi-$billion projects to rely on older technology, but funds have been set aside for them years/decades ago.
Not sure about TEN's demographic ... I'm sure the crowd is older! And old folks don't like change much.
