Hello --

First of all, excellent site. I didn't know I was an audophile (at least a beginner) until reading an article on NPR that pointed me in the direction of this Web site.

Rather than say "Hi, I'm a newbie, what do I need?" I thought I would ask some specific questions to hopefully get a better idea of what I need.

First of all, my audio setup is thus:

Technics direct drive turntable SL-1800
Technics receiver SA-GX290
Roberts 8-track recorder 808D
Centrix (by Pioneer) 8-track player
Allegra 1000 (by Zenith) speakers (2)

I really don't know anything about specific of each, in terms of if they are good. The turntable I bought for $250 at a used record store about 10 years ago (guessing around 30 years old). The receiver (10 years old) and speakers (older) were a hand-me-down. The 8-track players were a gift (and what a gift they are).

My musical tastes are primarily jazz between 1954-65, classical music and classic rock between 1967-76. To get more specific, I am into any kind of music featuring piano (for jazz and classical), and acoustic (i.e. CSNY, James Taylor) up to progressive (i.e. Renaissance, Yes).

Ever since hearing about the Wall of Sound, I've wanted to re-create that in my own "record room." I'm fairly happy with my current setup but - and that's why I'm here - I'd like to expand and better it. So, I'm looking for some ideas on what I can use to increase the quality of the types of music to which I listen. Two things: a) I'm not looking to break the bank but am open to spending a couple of hundred dollars on equipment, and b) I am of the mindset that older is better. Therefore, no new equipment for me at all. I am looking for the best of the best from 20, 30 years ago (vacuum tubes are a big plus) in terms of speakers, tuner, whatever.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions, and if you can give me some feedback on my current arrangement, I'd appreciate that as well.

Be good!
-brian
