Use the analog audio output of the computer and go into an analog input.

So I am planning on buying the ASUS STX II. For awhile, I had been connecting my pc to the avr using hdmi, because the s/pdif port was making popping noises. with the yamaha tsr-7810, should I purchase an analog cable and use the dac in the STX II, use coax or what?

...supports optical, coax, and analog. If you use ANY of the digital connections, you'll likely be using your AVR's DAC. Also, I've noticed that while some AVRs advertise analog inputs, they may actually convert the analog signal to digital so it can be processed -- that's the LAST thing that you want. Be sure to check your manual to ensure analog signals stay that way.
