The Shure 1840 continues to be my favorite headphone. A few weeks go I gave away my Sennheiser HD-800 after 2-1/2 years of very little use. The HD-800 had a slight advantage in harmonic details and bass strength, but that was overshadowed by excess brightness. This past week I gave away my Grado PS-500, Shure SRH-940 and German Maestro 8.35D, all of which were fine headphones except for irregularities and excess output between 2 and 10 khz. While the SRH-1840 is probably not perfect and would not likely please bass-philes, the sound is so smooth, clear, detailed, and lacking in irritations, that I can feel confident about getting maximum use out of it for the next few years no matter what new designs come along. Highly recommended.

Hi,

thanks for the great review, I confidently bought one after reading your opinion . The SRH-1840 are the best over the ear open back headphones a purist audiophile can enjoy ! I've spent above 2k in my search of " The One " headphone that tickles every frequency audible to my ears. I got these for 600$ from a local dealer. Thank you Mr. Dalethorn and thank you Shure engineers for producing the best Headphone ever!

Thank you for reading this. Stereophile was my inspiration for becoming a hi-fi enthusiast, so you're in the right place. I hope you can take the time to explore more of the things that are featured here, from the main page to all of the related sites.

The Shure 1840 was the NightHawk several years before the NightHawk, and it was the Focal Elear several years before the Elear, in its basic sound signature and quality. It isn't as up-to-date as the Focals now, but at only $500 USD new, it's a good deal.
