When 2-channel live recordings are made, isn't the idea to have the microphone diaphragms as close to co-located as possible, and have the pickup patterns offset by 90 degrees? If so, why does everyone say to form an equilateral triangle with the tweeters and the mid-point between your ears? That would make for 60 degree angles at each vertex. Should you instead form a 45-45-90 degree right triangle with your head at the vertex of the right angle? It seems that would recreate the the geometry of the recording more accurately.

And further, with our bodies' apparent mastery of timing-information decoding, why doesn't the fact that our ears are spaced apart screw with the locating sounds more?

And last, though not stereo, does having a bigger-than-normal noggin mean that binaural may not sound as realistic to me? My theory is that my brain is used to deciphering timing/phase information based on my overly large cranium, and perhaps binaural dummy mic ears are a little closer together which may be more becoming the 85 percentile.
