Hola,
Elk made some interesting comments on the "Bataan Death Thread" about the use of the term "veil" in audio.
Made me think...ouch...about these veils.
I think I've only seen fleeting glimpses behind that last veil in this audio dance. You know, that sensation of a system pouring out the pure, naked, unveiled sound of a live instrument in a live space. There have been some unexpected moments of wondering 'live or memorex,' but they never hold up over time.
We audiophiles become very quickly 'desensitized' to the wonders of our gear (which may be one of the reasons we are on an eternal quest, not arriving in a final place.)
Anyway, are there any systems or recording where the illusion has persisted for you?
Any listening sessions where you will feel the same sense of the final veil being lifted - on a repeatable basis?
That's a tall order.
One exemplar comes to mind first as I type this:
The Duke Ellington Band's "For Duke" direct to disc LP has a trumpet section on "Satin Doll" that gets me every time - that "this could be real" feeling. On the same cut, the other instruments don't manage to peer through the final veil. It's just that trumpet, for those few bars...but it persists!
(The rest of the disc is wonderful, too, but that trumpet...)
I'd love to hear what recordings you all may get this feeling from, however brief an excerpt.
Now THAT would be a good shopping list to assemble!
