I saw the Canadian Brass at Roy Thomson Hall (Toronto) on the 22nd for their annual Christmas performance. It wasn't entirely seasonal music, in fact they perfromed an Operetta with a Western theme... no not that "Western", Western as in the Wild Wild West! No kidding, it was a riot!
Anyway what a treat, I love brass so hearing these virtuosi was something special especially as they have always mixed it up musically, Corelli too New Orleans, they do it all!
Most of the seasonal selections were accompanied by Organ. They played their signature arrangement of Oh Holy Night, one of my favorite carols. That reminded me that I have the same on a Canadian Brass Christmas CD and played it the day after. GAWD what a letdown! I'm very proud of my system and think it does a great job at full range sound but compared to the recent memory of concert hall unamplified live it was strictly forgetaboutit!
We had great seats (row F, center seats, main floor) and at one point three of the players (of five) played in the audience. The tuba player actually sat about three rows forward (maybe 5 feet away) and the two trumpets players took up positions on opposite sides of the center rows. The player on the left was just a few rows back to my left, maybe 8 feet away. Talk about loud! The trumpet sounded like it was blasting right into my ears!
Great show.
